Bétaille Village House |
|
The property: It is a large detached house dating back about 300 years in part. It is set towards the back of the village, away from the main road, & it faces south with an enclosed garden containing shrubs, trees & flowers. There are areas both of open sun & of shade. There is a parking area by the front gate. It contains a large dining area, a kitchen, a bathroom/w.c. & a double-bedded room on the ground floor; a large lounge, a double (king size) bedded room and an open south facing terrace on the 1st floor, and a large properly converted attic of 25m² which provides the third private bedroom, sleeping 2 people (or possibly 4 children) on the 2nd floor and which also has a second w.c. and washbasin. There is ample living space for a group of 6 or 8. For spring, autumn or winter lets, it also has oil fired central heating & a wood-burning stove. The kitchen and bathroom have been newly fitted in the last 2 years, and contain, respectively, a conventional cooker, a microwave, a fridge/freezer & an automatic washing machine; and a bath with shower over, WC., and washbasin. There is a television/video with French channels only. There is a cot available. The beds are provided with mattress covers, quilts and pillows, but bed linen is not included in the rental cost. We can provide sheets, quilt covers and pillow cases for each bed at an additional cost of £5 per person. Generally, the house has been refurbished to a modern standard whilst trying to show as much of the original building as possible. All rooms have radiators connected to an oil fired central heating system. There is a telephone point on both the ground and second floors. The furnishings and decoration are generally modern and comfortable. |

Surrounding Area: The village has all the necessary shops such as bakers, butchers, grocers/small supermarkets within walking distance and it is possible to do all your shopping without driving elsewhere. There is also a twice weekly market in Vayrac, about a mile away, which has fresh fish, cheese, fruit and vegetables, and other local farm produce. Bétaille has a restaurant, The Relais de Palsou (which also has a separate bar and tabac), which is good and inexpensive. There are numerous other places to eat within a bike ride or a short car journeys distance. On a more mundane note, there is a doctor and a dentist in the village, should the need arise, and Vayrac also has two pharmacies. We have lived here for three years now and have found the people very friendly and welcoming. The nearby small towns of Bretenoux & St Céré both have local markets twice weekly, and have a range of other shops & larger supermarkets. For more serious shopping, there is Brive about 30 minutes drive, or Cahors about 1 hours drive away. There are cinemas in Biars, St Céré and Vayrac, which show a mixture of both American and European films, and generally have the new releases fairly quickly. There is a Parc Aquatique with a huge open air swimming pool with picnicking areas & a restaurant on site between Bétaille & Carennac, which is less than 10 minutes away from the house. There is also a large swimming lake about 5 kilometres away, and it is possible to swim in the river at various places nearby. There is easy access to canoe hire centres at a number of places along the river Dordogne, including Vayrac. It is a lovely area for walking or cycling at any level of difficulty, either along the valley or climbing to the cliffs and gorges on either side, giving access to some spectacular views – local walking maps are available for your use whilst staying in the house. Bicycles can be hired in Vayrac. The famous sites of Rocamadour & Padirac are within half an hours drive, and there are numerous vineyards to visit in the Lot, as well as one nearby in the Correze. If you are touring by car, then the western Dordogne valley with all it’s chateaux and towns is easily reached, as are the Auvergne, the Correze, the caves at Pech Merle & les Eyzies, etc. |
