Surrounding Area: Set in the north west of the rich historic department of the Dordogne, the Périgord Vert offers the green agricultural and hunting land and this house is set near the Foret de la Double. Vast expanses of beautiful fields - grazing cattle, sunflowers, forest and old stone villages abound. Nearest market town in the Dordogne with weekly street market is Ribérac (circa 14 km) with a good open Friday street market, and over border into the Charente, the lovely château town of Chalais, which has a Monday morning open street market, as well as supermarkets and garage.
The nearby village of St Privat-des-Prés ( www.stprivatdespres.com ) has a good village shop and small bar, a town hall and post office.
St Aulaye (circa 5km) is a bustling little town with a supermarket (8 à 8 - open on Sunday morning), garage, a few shops, including a beauticians, and tourist office. Situated on the river, the riverside comes alive in summer with a café and beach area.
Ribérac has a good number of large supermarkets and garages - a newly refurbished and expanded Leclerc which includes gardening furniture and equipment and the more economical Intermarché with neighbouring Bricomarché at the other end of town.
One of France's most beautiful villages is Aubeterre (circa 10 km) - beautiful ancient hill-top village with its monolithic church carved into solid rock - summer restaurants and pottery shops. The nearby river Dronne offers canoeing and riverside walks and park.
Just a short drive away south is La Jemaye - area of outstanding natural beauty and a lake with thoughtfully developed walkways and cafes - open for swimming with lifeguards in summer months until mid-September. There are cafés, tourist information shop and pedalloes/canoes for hire.
It goes without saying that a foray into the neighbouring wine areas, not only of Bergerac, but also Bordeaux is a must. St Emilion being the most stunning ancient town to visit with its vineyards and readily available dégustation. Brantôme, the little Venice of the Dordogne offers great restaurants and a waterway of walks; nearby Bordeilles has a stunning château and good restaurants too.
The dramatic Atlantic coast is only an hour and a half's drive away. Nearest coastline resorts - Royan, and St Georges de Didonne in Charente with great expanses of clean white sand and plenty of good restaurants and animation for visitors in the summer months. Further south the well-healed resort of Arcachon beckons with its array of modern restaurants, great shopping area and boat trips to Cap Ferret - and the mini train ride to dune and beach for the surf experience.
Cities of Périgueux (capital of Dordogne) and majestic Bordeaux are just over an hour's drive away from the house.
