Surrounding Area: Situated in south west France in the valley of the Garonne, one of France’s largest rivers, this is very much an agricultural area renowned for its fruit production. The open rolling countryside is dotted with medieval fortified (bastide) towns and covered market places. It is off the beaten tourist track in the relatively unknown department of Tarn-et-Garonne. Les Esquilhots is situated 1 km from the small village of Garganvillar. Nearby the larger town of Castelsarrasin, through which the Canal du Midi flows, meets all major shopping requirements with a choice of supermarkets and a thriving weekly market plus doctors, dentists etc. Within easy range, there is the picturesque abbey and cloister town of Moissac, the rural charm of Beaumont-de-Lomagne and the cobbled streets of more sophisticated Montauban with boutiques, art gallery and museums. Carcassonne, Albi, Gaillac, the Lot Valley, Cahors, Auch and the heart of Gascony all provide a worthwhile day out. There are plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling, horse riding and swimming as well as for sampling the wine and cuisine of the region, noted for its duck specialities. The bustling and dynamic city of Toulouse is an easy hour’s drive away, or Bordeaux in the opposite direction only two hours. Good road and autoroute connections allow for easy exploration. |
