Surrounding Area: St Marcel is a medieval village which has attracted a lot of investment recently in renovation and restoration of its streets. It has a bar which serves food and an artisan boulangerie (this is excellent!) On the edge of the commune is a large supermarket There is an art school, art gallery and museum. Argentomagus museum tells the history of this roman settlement and is situated close by. This is a recognised tourist destination for the French as well as other nationalities. Argenton sur Creuse is a delightful French town with a central square and street cafés. It takes about 15 minutes to walk there and it is well worth spending time wandering around the streets, town and the river. It caters for all tastes in food, from the " take away", to Pizzeria to Haute Cuisine, Argenton has them all, even Chinese! Daily guided tours of the town are available, or you may prefer to wander and discover Argenton on your own. In the 19th Century the town was a major producer of shirts, this important clothes industry now recognised in the Musée de la Chemiserie et de l'élégance masculine. For those wanting to exert a bit more energy, Argenton sur Creuse also has a large swimming pool with slides to enjoy Its winding cobbled lanes around its thriving marketplace make this town livelier than many expect from the heart of rural France. Its Thursday and Saturday markets are not to be missed, though get up early as much will have gone by midday! Meanwhile the town’s old mediaeval houses have been well preserved, providing much to look at while exploring the town's streets. Less than 1 hour to the west is the town of Poitiers capital of the Vienne, with "futurescope" theme park for the family day out, as well as the stunning architecture. La Chatre, approx. 30 mins drive east is another probably Romanesqe town, historians still argue over the true origins of the city. Some say it started out as a Roman camp, although many others say it goes back even further. Despite the fact that the city was burned to the ground in 1152, most of the town since then has been well preserved. In 1424 a castle was built to protect the city, although it was soon transformed into a prison. It now functions as a museum. |
