Surrounding Area: Les Volets Rouges is situated some 1½ kilometres from Allonnes, a small town situated only 14 kilometres from Saumur. Allonnes, which has the famous Parc Maupassant, also boasts bakeries, bars, banks, a newsagent, garage, hardware shop, florist, numerous coiffeurs and even a small supermarket. All are within comfortable range by bicycle, foot or car. There are numerous activities in the neighbourhood. Les Volets Rouges sits at the centre of a region which is renowned as the ancient holiday playground of the French Royalty and aristocracy. There are many famous and beautiful towns, monasteries and ancient chateaux and gardens that can be visited. In the region around some of the best known wines in France are produced: Chinon; Bourgeuil; St Nicholas de Bourgeuil; Vouvray; Muscadet & Champigny to name just a few. Degustations or tastings are available throughout the area. Somewhere in the region there is a market on each day of the week throughout the year. The market appreciated most by the locals - the Tuesday market in Bourgeuil - is a wonderful celebration of French gastronomy where a huge range of foods, wines and other local produce can be found. There is a riding stable in Allonnes parish for those who enjoy horse riding. In fact Saumur and the areas around are regarded as the horse-riding centre of France. The well-known Cadre Noire – a regiment of highly skilled horsemen based in Saumur - give dressage displays throughout most of the year. There is an ice-skating rink in Bourgueil 14½ km away. There are public sessions throughout the year. There is a 9 hole golf club just the other side of Saumur which provides a perfect combination of a gentle stroll with a bit of exercise. Cycling is popular because of the gentle rolling countryside that typifies the area surrounding the Loire. There are many small, manageable country roads where traffic is scarce. There is also a large variety of historic and pretty Hamlets to cycle through on the way to lunch! Many are drawn to this area to go walking in the spring or autumn. Apart from the attractions offered by the local countryside there is a huge signed network of walks that extends throughout the National Forest which begins only half a kilometre North of Les Volets Rouges. There is a sailing club at the water-park in Saumur where lessons can be obtained. At certain times of the year there are guided boat rides on the Loire. There is also an extensive water-park in Bourgueil where you can swim or rent pedalos. |
