Surrounding Area: Welcome to Cognac Country This region is famous for sunshine, slippers (go figure)and Cognac - the ideal ingredients for a relaxing holiday.
Summers are long and hot, springtime is warm, and autumns are lazy and golden.
Touring and cycling is a pleasure on quiet country roads edged with wild flowers, winding through sleepy villages, vineyards, fields of sunflowers and the cool of Aulnay forest.
You can browse in the elegant shops of Cognac, Saintes or La Rochelle, or choose from mile after mile of sandy beaches or long, lazy rivers.
All year round there are fairs and festivals celebrating anything from South American music to wine and even the navel! The biggest outdoor bric-a-brac fair in France is held in Marsac every September and there are numerous smaller fairs all over the area.
There are 2 good golf courses within 40 mins drive of Chez Gabrielle, at Cognac or Sainte
We are just over an hour from the wonderful west coast beaches, making places like Royan, Ile' d'Oleron and the chic Parisian haunt of Ile d'Re, an exccellent day out. Both children and adults will enjoy a trip to the amazing Futuroscope near Poitiers or the aquarium at La Rochelle where the sharks swim over your head. Dozens of cognac distilleries both small and large welcome visitors to see how this precious liquid is made - and to sample the finished product. If you have a sweet tooth we recommend a visit to the chocolate factory near Angouleme. There are also plenty of chateaux to visit including Sleeping Beauty's castle "La Roche Courbon" and hundreds of romanesque churches. Lastly, you mustn't miss the dreadlock donkeys at Dompierre.
Our Village Fontaine Chalendray is a small, peaceful hilltop village with many interesting old houses and a twelfth century church. Even Napoleon is said to have slept here but, as for Josephine......
Our cottages are on the southern edge of Fontaine, two minutes walk from Mimi's award winning grocery store and we also have several mobile shops which stop at the gate, selling fresh bread and croissants, oysters from the nearby Atlantic coast and delicious patés and sausages.
Shopping We have some of the best markets in France, such as St Jean d'Angély, Cognac and Rouillac - the largest monthly market in the region.
Supermarket shopping is available in Matha or Aulnay (both a 15 minute drive away) and hypermarket shopping in the larger towns such as Cognac or St Jean d'Angeley.
Restaurants: The closest restaurant is five minutes away by car in the town of Nere. The Bistrot St.Pierre is run by Michelle and Russell, offering excellent local cuisine, and amazing value which is complimented by a warm and friendly welcome in rustic French surroundings. For a more chic dining experience try the Hotel de La Place in St Jean. There are also many excellent family-run ferme-auberges, up to Michelin stared restaurants. You can even enjoy a leisurely lunch as you cruise down the Charente on a riverboat.
Local specialities include excellent seafood, Charentais melon with Pineau, walnut oil, angelica liqueur, tourteau cheesecake, honey and goat cheese.
