Surrounding Area: Normandy is well known as the original home of William the Conqueror and in more recent history as the location of the D Day landings on 6th June 1944. Today, Normandy is a thriving area of Northern France with beautiful beaches and picturesque towns and villages, including Mont St Michel and Bayeux. Normandy is a haven for cyclists and walkers who enjoy the lovely countryside, especially in the area known as Suisse Normande (Swiss Normandy), so named because of its stunning rugged scenery. The area is also popular with canoeists who like to paddle on the River Orne. Normandy produces delicious cheeses including the original Camembert (the town of Camembert is close by), meats and fresh vegetables. Apples grow in abundance and are used in Norman cooking and to make Calvados and some of the world’s best cider. |
