The property: Le Chai is on two floors, with a living/dining/kitchen room downstairs and one bedroom with en-suite shower room upstairs. This part of our two-hundred year-old farmhouse used to house a wine vat, and with its many exposed beams has a traditional feel. Renovated to a high standard, and well-insulated, le Chai has a modern kitchen and shower room and comfortable furniture, so you won’t have to experience the draughty discomforts of the house’s previous occupants! The picture window at the front of the gîte affords extensive views of our sheltered courtyard and the open farmland beyond.

Outside Area: In front of the gîte, le Chai has a delightful terrace in the sunniest corner of our sheltered courtyard, furnished with comfortable wooden chairs and table, and a stone barbecue for alfresco dining. Behind the house is our generous pool area, where our heated pool will be open between April and October. Beyond this, we have a grassed area of over 2 acres sandwiched between beautiful countryside, bordered by an oak wood.

Surrounding Area: Between them, the local towns of Jonzac and Montendre hold fresh markets four days a week, where the locals gather to shop and gossip.

Jonzac (15 kms) is a stunning medieval town, with an imposing 15th-century château. In addition it has thermal baths whose treatments are extensive, and whose waters have been recognised for their effectiveness in treating various complaints. The local swimming complex has a water slide, tropical lagoon, wavepool, bubble spas and saunas.

For water-lovers, there is a large lake in Montendre (8kms) for swimming, fishing and water sports. In Montguyon (25 kms) is the glorious Aire de Beau Vallon, which is a fresh-water lake surrounded by many acres of pine forest.

Within an hour’s drive are the beautiful cities of Saintes, Cognac, Angoulême and Bordeaux and the pretty seaside resort of Royan. A little further afield, and you can visit St Emillion, a world heritage site, or even Bergerac in the Dordogne region.

Pricing Info: October to April £375 per month, including electricity, water, linen and towels. Payment by cheque or standing order with one month’s rent as deposit (three months if you have pets). For all other times, rent charged per week as follows : May, June and September £250, July and August £375.
