Surrounding Area: Banyuls sur Mer is a delightful French Mediterranean seaside town near the Spanish border. Famous for its sweet dessert wine and for wonderful walking in the Pyrénées. The GR10 starts here and ends on the Atlantic coast at Hendaye. Sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking can be learnt here. There is an underwater nature reserve for snorkling and a dive school. Skiing is about 2 hours away, Spain’s Costa Brava about 1½ hours drive. One hour to the Cathar castles, one and a half hour to Carcassonne.

The famous artist village of Collioure is 9 kms down the coast. Port Vendres is 5 kms away and has a daily fish market. Banyuls market is every Sunday.
