The area is of undulating landscape with great walks through the country. A local stadium has facilities for tennis, football and skateboarding. Also available are equestrian centres for horse lovers. Numerous châteaux’s are in the area like Reaumur XV11, la Flocellière, Château Pouzages The Fortress dates from the X11 and X111 centuries has 12 towers including the magnificent Keep & Sigournais 15th Century feudal castle at Sigournais on the border between the Haut and Bas Bocage, hunting ground of Louis X1V. Bazoges en Pareds which is visible from the villa is 5 mins by car and has the historic medieval donjon castle tower with herb gardens. The Restaurant ‘Auberge de Donjon’ serves exquisite meals and highly recommended as booking is necessary.
A nature’s paradise awaits all in the forests of Mervant and Vouvant which is 15mins from the villa and boasts vast wooded valley with lakes, dams & power station. Perfect for cycling, walking, climbing, horse riding, kayaking, sailing, canoeing and picnicking. The forest also has a wild life sanctuary and a fun park. This is a wonderful day out for families with restaurants and bars at the scenic waters edge.
The surrounding towns of Fontenay le Comte, Renaissance town, La Châtaigneraie, Chantonay, St Hermine, La Roche Sur Yon all have great market days. Being larger towns these have major supermarkets and are between 10 – 30 mins from the property and present a great shopping experience and historic buildings.
The Marais-Poitevin offers a natural environment that is unique in France. The wooded region is extensively crossed by canals and rivers, and in many parts is best explored by boat - usually 'barques', the flat-bottomed boats, are used. Dinghy and canoe trips are also popular on the quiet waters. These provide access to the still, green waters, in the shadows of the polars and weeping willows and provide a unique insight into this beautiful region. Information about hiring boats, guided tours and routes is available in many places in the region.
The large fishing port of l'Aiguillon is just 40 minutes away. You can choose from a range of freshly-caught fish, mussels, oysters, langoustine and gambas at the town's fish market which is open every weekday at 5am.
The coastal restorts of La Sable d’Olonne famous for the Vendée Globe great restaurants and casino. La Tranche sur Mer boasts over 13 km of fine sandy beach and is a busy tourist destination with fine gourmet eating and places of interest. Historic La Rochelle is just over 50kms away and the island of Ile de Re famous for it’s beaches and lighthouse.
Le Puy du Fou is only 20 mins away from the villa is one of the “must see” attractions in the Vendée. A fantastic attraction for all ages, and more than a theme park in the traditional sense. Le Puy du Fou offers a selection of wonderful historical shows. Take a step back in time as history is brought to life in various enactments right in front of your eyes. In the Grand Parc wander the medieval city or the 1900's market town, witness the gladiators battling it out in the amphitheatre and enjoy a walk through the Puy du Fou forest, with over 1000 domestic, wild and exotic animals.
