Description of Property:   Originally being part of the grounds of the neighbouring and very modest "Chateau Lys" and later divided off to have its own private identity with its beautiful large orchard garden and other belonging stone outbuildings, "Le Lys" has been recently and very lovingly restored to highlight its charming character and history. Built over 170 years ago, its "inner beauty" has now been unveiled, with beautiful stone walls throughout, fireplaces revealed and the original oak floor boards, beams and master bedroom A-frame restored to their natural glory.

Le Lys boasts 4 bedrooms in total - two master bedrooms - the first with it's beautiful original oak A-frame structure and luxurious roll-top bath en-suite (a real treat!) and the second with a walk in shower en-suite with rainforest setting. There is a further good sized double bedroom and twin attic room with traditional oak French "bateau" double beds. All bedrooms have original oak beams and each has its own character, highlighting its original attributes.
A cot bed is available if required.

The ground floor comprises large and very sociable kitchen/diner with original stone fireplace. spacious Lounge, also with original fireplace, games room with pool table, play room, family shower room and walk in food storage pantry.

The large, bright and sociable open planned kitchen/diner really is the hub of the house and offers a great place to entertain and socialise. With large square stone effect floor tiles, wooden beach worktops, Belfast sink and French sail boat style bespoke linen cupboard fronts, along with the revealed stone & brick fireplace with wood burner, it makes for the perfect place to cook and dine all year round and is always a hit with our visitors! Fully equipped with built in oven, hob, microwave, fridge freezer, dishwasher and with all cutlery, kitchen utensils, oven ware and china ware included you have everything you need at your fingertips! The large oak dining table seats up to 10 and is situated next to the fireplace - perfect for those winter evenings of entertaining by the fire (made even more perfect when accompanied by a seasonal home made vin chaude!) The washing machine and tumble-dryer are situated in the utility area of the play room.

The lounge is again a spacious, warm and inviting room to socialise in with original French stone fireplace and wood burner, comfortable sofas, a rocking chair and all the things provided to ensure you can enjoy those cosy nights in, including English television with free-view box, DVD player with a selection of DVDs to choose from, radio/CD player with MP3 player connection and a selection of books to read. There are many leaflets and brochures to choose from for information and ideas on the many places and activities to chose from and visit in the area. The stunning Victorian spiral staircase leads from the lounge to the 1st floor landing which accesses the 2 master bedrooms.

The games room with pool table has first flight of wooden stairs leading to first two bedrooms.

The playroom is equipped to entertain little ones with a tunnel, small table and chairs, hula hoops, giant jenga, a selection of toys for small children and family board games.

Downstairs family shower room with walk in shower enclosure and basin unit. Separate WC.

Outside Amenities:  The ever changing orchard garden and wildlife it attracts is a marvel to watch throughout the year, especially in April when the trees come into blossom and the garden spring into colour! An amazing array of birds can be seen, on a regular basis including large birds of prey such as hawks, kites and kestrels. Woodpeckers are regular visitors also, especially when the cherries are out and they come for their share! At night time, you have every chance of viewing one of the many owls which sweep over the house from time to time - Truly beautiful!

The garden also provides a beautiful setting to dine and entertain in during the warmer months and if on a clear night, it is amazing for star gazing!

The 6m x 4m pool is used seasonally and on a shared agreed day by day rota basis with the owner. The length of use each year depends on the weather, but would generally be usable from May to September.

Provided are: 2x garden tables and chairs to seat 8, a triple seated comfy swing seat to relax and enjoy the views from, BBQ, paddling pool, double swing for smaller children with baby seat swing option, bat and ball games and boules. Bicycles also available on request.

Depending on what time of year you arrive, you are more than welcome to indulge in some of the fruit from the orchard garden. There are cherry, plum, pear, raspberry and peach trees to choose from, all offering delicious fruit for all to enjoy!
For the avid chef, there is also a herb garden with fennel, parsley, mint, rosemary and a bay tree to pick from and add a little organic flavour!

Surrounding Area:  The cottage is based in the rural village of La Chapelle Aux Lys, known as the "Village étoilé" for its spectacular starry night skies and where the annual festival of astronomy is held every August, it is also a popular destination for cyclists, being on the "Route Cyclables de la Vendee". Also en route of "La Randonée du Lys"with a choice of two mapped walks which guide you around the area, highlighting the local sights and attractions, it is ideal for the avid walker or hiker.

There are many beautiful places to visit and explore nearby to include the various pretty villages, rivers, historical landmarks and beaches.

Foussais Payré with its beautiful big church, sculptures and delicious chocolatièr has a market every Wednesday morning with a selection of artisinal products.

The nearest town, La Chataigneraie is a 10 minute drive, offering 2 large supermarkets, banks, shops, restaurants, hairdressers, gym/sport hall, florists, boulangeries/patisseries, butcher/charcuterie, pharmacies etc.

Throughout the year there are various festivals and events in the nearby villages and towns to enjoy.

The nearest boloungerie is reachable within 5 minutes in the neighbouring village of St Hilaire De Voust, where you can also find tennis courts and the Lion D'Or Restaurant, serving delicious French cuisine all year round and even offering the most delicious roast dinners on a Sunday!

In the nearby village of Faymoreau you will find the "Centre Minier" where you can explore the mining museum, descend into the reconstituted mine and learn the interesting history of coal in the region.

Fontenay Le Comte is a beautiful town with history and museums to explore. There are beautiful buildings to see, set off by the river Vendée running through the town. Fontenay is larger and more commercial than La Chataigneraie, with more outlets to choose from including clothes shops. There is a Saturday morning market here throughout the year, offering various local artisinal fresh food products and crafts etc.

Fontenay has various restaurants and bars open throughout the year. Just outside of the Centre Ville is an industrial estate where you will find many commercial outlets offering various different products, covering every need. The nearest hospital is also here.

L'Absie is a pretty village reachable within 15 minutes which offers everything that La Chataignerie has to offer, with added bars and a little more weekend evening social activity, such as as live bands etc. There is a large ex-pat community in L'Absie, so if you are looking to meet others who speak English and have made the move to the area themselves, then this is the place to go!

Classed as one of the prettiest villages in France, the stunning Vouvant is just 15 minutes drive, girdled by a loop of the river Mère with beautiful medieval buildings, stunning views, superb restaurants, local artists and art galleries, it offers an excellent mix of art, culture and history.

Adjacent to Vouvant and also reachable within 15 minutes is the village of Mervent with its huge forest extending over 5000 hectares and vast fresh water lake with safe swimming and numerous sports activities available suchas hiking, horse riding, mountain biking and many water activities with its' own water sports school, pedalos and canoes to hire. There are also restaurants over looking the lake and a man made beach where you can relax, sunbathe and swim during the warmer months. Also within Mervent is the Naturezoo.

The lush green and very beautiful "Venise Verte", Marais Poitevin is reachable within approximately 30 minutes and is definitely worth a visit. Renowned for its waterways, the best way to see the region and its wildlife is by boat (barques can be hired seasonally), or bicycle.

Niort is another beautiful town, reachable within 40 minutes. It is steeped in history and has the beautiful river Sèvre Niortaise running through it. There is a very cosmopolitan feel to the town with lots of restaurants and bars to choose from and pretty cobbled lanes lined with shops. Very special to see in winter when they have their Christmas markets, set off by festive illuminations!

The stunning and very bustling city of Nantes is reachable within 1.5 hours drive of the cottage.

Other attractions to visit in the area are the amazing historical Puy du Fou, which has been voted Europe's no. 1 theme park attraction and has the following Trip Advisor quote when given the 2013 Travellers Choice Award: " for an unforgettable trip with family or friends! Puy du Fou Park is a whirlwind of extraordinary shows and a real breath of fresh air far from everyday hustle and bustle." If you get the opportunity to catch a Christmas show, you are in for a real treat!

For the keen fisherman, Pescalis is a 20 minute drive and is one of the premier fishing complexes in Europe!

The cottage is a 1- 1.5 hours drive (depending on where you choose to visit) to the beaches of La Tranche, Jard, Brem, Les Sables D'Olonne, La Faute Sure Mer with their long sandy beaches. Chatelaillon, the harbour side town of La Rochelle, and the unforgettable and very chic Ile de Re with its beaches, small ports, shops and cafés. Charron is renowned for its mussels and is the place to go if you like seafood!

Availability: This property is available year round for longer lets.

Our long term rentals are available for 9.5 months of the year, from early September - mid July. We operate higher rate weekly holiday lets each year from mid July through to the end of August, during which period no long term lower rate rentals will be available.
