Description of Property:
Stay in the heart of medieval Duras and enjoy night markets, festivals, restaurants and bars without having to drive. All amenities are in easy walking distance, including banks, estate agents, a chemist, small supermarket, bread shops and the weekly morning markets. Light and airy, the house comfortably accommodates six people in three bedrooms with two bathrooms (showers). Relax on the first floor dining terrace - a really sunny spot with seating and BBQ provided.
While it is possible to holiday in Duras without a car (contact details for airport transfer services can be provided on request), public transport is not available locally, so access to a car is recommended if you would like to enjoy all the amenities the surrounding countryside, towns and villages have to offer.
Peak season is July and August when the town really comes to life with various festivals, Thursday night markets, exhibitions, tours of the historic Château and a very popular wine festival. There is an outdoor swimming pool available for public use just 10 km away on the edge of Monsegur as well as a much larger indoor / outdoor complex 25 km away in Marmande. Various lakeside and river beaches are also within a 30+ minute drive and can offer a great family day out. Other activities in the general area include golf courses, horse riding, canoeing and other boat trips, and of course many opportunities for walking or cycling in the beautiful countryside surrounding Duras (bicycle hire is available in Duras).
Duras lies in the heart of wine country with many independent wineries offering complementary tastings - some also have gastronomic evenings with locally produced specialities to complement your wine. The area is also famous for delicious prunes, hazelnuts and for chocolates combining the two in irresistible sweet treats..! Locally sourced duck products, tasty cheeses and a huge variety of fruits and vegetables are on offer every Monday morning at the Duras weekly traditional French market.
Inside the house, all appliances are shiny and new, there are comfy sofas and UK satellite TV in the lounge area, a lovely long dining table, and on the first floor there's a sunny terrace with additional outside dining facilities for six, including a BBQ. Free WiFi is available.
On the ground floor there's a bright 11 metre (36 ft) open plan living and dining room, a shower room, separate toilet and a bright fully fitted and equipped kitchen (fridge freezer, full electric oven, gas hob, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, kettle and coffee maker). There are double doors from a sunny hallway linking the dining room and kitchen, to a long passage leading to rue Chavassier - a quiet road with free on-street parking.
Enclosed stairs lead to the first floor where you will find another shower room with toilet and sink, and three bedrooms. The front bedroom is lovely and sunny with two windows to the front of the property and has a large 160 cm ( 63 inch) double bed. The rear bedroom is also very bright and airy with French doors onto the dining terrace and a 140 cm (55 inch) double bed. The slightly more compact internal third bedroom has two 90 cm (36 inch) single beds with natural light coming from a skylight into the attic (where there is a Velux window in the roof). All the bedrooms have plenty of storage.
All bed linen is provided for your stay as are towels for the bathroom. If you would like towels to use for sun bathing etc please bring these with you.
If you have any questions after reading all of the above please contact us via the website and we would be very pleased to respond as quickly as possible.
Outside Amenities: A good sized pretty terrace is accessed via one of the first floor bedrooms - chairs and tables to flexibly seat up to six diners (3 x sturdy folding bistro tables) as well as a gas BBQ for your use. Sun worshippers will enjoy seclusion and a sunny aspect for most of the day.
On the ground floor there is a small covered seating area and a passage leading to rue Chavassier where there is free on-street parking. A long clothes line is also located in this outside area.
Surrounding Area: All the amenities of Duras are on your doorstep including weekly markets - Monday mornings throughout the year and night markets on Thursdays in the peak summer months. Other weekly markets are available in the surrounding towns (including Monségur 10km, Eymet 22km, Miramont-de-Guyenne 18km, Sainte-Foy-la-Grande 22km). There are several café-bars and restaurants within a few hundred yards, as well as shops, a small supermarket, banks, two bakeries, a church, chemist, doctor, several estate agents, and the beautiful château. There is a larger supermarket on the edge of town with a broad selection of local produce - this is no more than a 10 minute level walk from the apartment.
Bicycles can be hired from a shop located in the centre of Duras - these can be safely stored under the stairs of the apartment if a weekly hire is selected. There are tennis courts for hire in Duras, Levignac de Guyenne (6km) and Saint Sernin (8km), and air balloon rides take off near the château when weather conditions permit. Canoes can be hired on the river Dropt in Allemans-du-Dropt (12 km) and the river Dordogne (Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, 22km). Various golf courses are within half an hours drive. The park surrounding Duras Château has various public picnic areas and a playground. The countryside surrounding Duras is very picturesque and lends itself to long walks or cycle rides - local accompanied walks are free to join during the summer months. A number of good quality vineyards are within easy reach and most offer wine tasting at most times of the year. Not far from the foot of the Château is a locally renowned prunerie with a wide selection of chocolates, preserves and other products.
