Description of Property:
Comfortable cottage, recently renovated with picturesque 180 degree views from balcony and terrace. Outdoor seats and table provided for terrace.
The ground floor - Kitchen and dining room is fully equipped for long or short stays. Kitchen comprises of electric hob and oven, fridge-freezer, microwave, toaster, kettle, coffee-maker and more. A large dining table with 6 chairs, buffet unit and separate corner room with washing machine and toilet are also on this level.
Middle floor - Solid stairway leads to the first floor lounge with balcony overlooking the Aude River Valley. This bright, airy living room is furnished with lounge chairs and a sofa-bed (to sleep 2 people), large screen TV, CD/I-Pod player, dvd player, wi-fi and telephone. On this level, there is a corner nook with books, games and CDs, and a desk. The second WC is also on this floor, particularly convenient for guests on this level.
Top floor - The cottage has 2 bedrooms on the 2nd floor - A double and a twin room with comfortable beds and wooden floors. Quality decor, mats and bed linen are provided. There are chests of drawers, hanging robes and shelving in the rooms as well as lamp shades for each bed and mirrors etc. Between the two bedrooms is a bathroom with jet shower and toilet.
There are windows/skylights with views from each bedroom.
Bathrooms - as mentioned, the cottage has a WC on the ground floor and first floor plus a family bathroom with shower, heated towel rail and toilet on the 2nd floor. All towels are provided.
The cottage is heated with electric wall hung radiators in each room. In summer heating is included in the price. For winter electricity is charged at cost price by meter readings.
As this region is known for its history, culture, wine and beautiful scenery, it easy to walk beyond the property or drive at your own pace, to explore the nature and history within the villages of the region.
Outside Amenities: Garden and outside -
The south facing terrace is ornately decorated with pots, flowers and it's own grapevine. This terrace and the middle floor balcony have breathtaking views over the Aude River Valley to Rennes le Chateau and Coustaussa Castle. The Pyrenees mountain ranges can be seen in the background.
Parking-There is free off road parking near to the cottage and in the Village Place, near the Mairie.
We are a short walk to the river Aude and the neighbouring village of Couiza with bars, restaurants, boulangeries, supermarket, hair dressers, beautician, florist, pharmacy, organic produce store, tourist office, ATM, post office, schools and medical centre. 3 different wineries with cellar door are located within 2-3 km from the property, one being 300m down the road. Historical buildings such as the Castle of the Ducs de Joyeuses and the ruins of the Historic Monastry are closeby.
Surrounding Area: The cottage is at the centre of the Cathar region, filled with fascinating hill top castles and ruins to visit. It is not far from the medieval city of Carcassonne, with its amazing and often tragic history for which this region is renowned. Just across the valley from the cottage is Rennes-le-Château, centre of a mystery still very much alive with many books written & films made on the subject. The link with the village is very strong - in 1852 Bérenger Saunière, the priest at the centre of the mystery was born in Montazels. His father lived in the old historic Monastry located behind our property.
We have several very good restaurants within 15 minutes walk over the river bridge in Couiza. Montazels is also home to La Cave Des Haute d'Aldae, and the Anne de Joyeuses cave, a 5 minute walk from the cottage where the excellent local wines can be tasted and bought.
Aude en Pyrénées is the crossroads of the Corbieres and the Pyrénées, an ideal location to go hiking with 190 km of way-marked trails. For anglers the aude is a Grade 1 trout river just 10 minutes walk from the door, where you can also find Mediterranean barbel, while rafters, white water swimmers, and kayakers of all levels of ability are offered the most exceptional water sports in the gorges of the Aude Valley. The Mediterranean coast is just over an hours drive with picturesque villages en route and once there, long stretches of golden sand all to yourself out of season. Our local spa villages Rennes les Bains and Alet le Bain also offer bathing in hot spa waters containing natural minerals renowned for their curative properties. There are several local freshwater lakes with beaches for bathing, the nearest is Arque (7 mins. drive) Beyond this, you can drive further towards the Oriental Pyrenees to visit Spain!
