Description of Property: A Casetta is ground floor and has easy access. The interior is exceptionally light and airy; it's easy to heat in the winter, and to keep cool in the summer, thanks to the excellent insulation and double glazing. The walls are white and the colour scheme is restful with the same lovely terracotta tiles and dove-grey woodwork throughout. From the private terrace one enters through French windows into the living/dining area, which is furnished with table and chairs, a sideboard and the antique bedstead which serves as a sofa. There is one step up to the bedroom area, which is partially separated from the living area by glazed panels "chiné" from an old bank. Then comes the kitchenette, the spacious shower-room, and the separate WC.
Outside Amenities: Mediterranean style rockery garden directly in front of A Casetta, which faces south with a lovely view over the gardens towards the Pyrénées (more often visible in winter than in summer). Diagonally opposite are the beautiful stone walls of La Bergerie, the home of Louis and Sue, the bilingual owners of the property. A Casetta's terrace is 12 sq metres and is equipped with a table, chairs and sunloungers. On the far side of La Bergerie is a further extensive walled garden where Louis and Sue's pool and hot tub are to be found, also a herb garden and orchard. Residents of A Casetta will be welcome to use the composters and pick the herbs in this garden, and in all likelihood will be invited to use the swimming pool at times, although access to the pool is not automatically included in the rental.
The property is entirely walled and includes a parking area which is accessed by electronic gates.
Surrounding Area: We're in the heart of a village (yet it's usually so quiet, especially at night ....except during the village fête for a night or two in July, or if one of the neighbours happens to have a party, which happens once or twice a year) and just a couple of minutes on foot from an excellent boulangerie-pâtisserie, the post office and Le Romarin restaurant-bar. Markets: there's at least one a day in the area (except Sundays) the best are: Saturdays, Carcassonne or Revel; Mondays, Mirepoix; Wednesdays, Bram. Mini "market" in our village on Fridays, with a greengrocer, butcher. and fishmonger. Local dairy producer comes to our village once a week. Organic market garden 1.5 kms and an organic veggie box vending machine (fresh and healthy veg 24/7!) in Montolieu (3kms) as well as more than a score of bookshops and art galleries (painting and sculpture), and some restaurants (some closed in winter).
Lovely walks and bike rides straight from the property (bikes and guides to walk available). Riding centre 1 km, tennis courts 5 kms, golf course 15kms. Lake and river swimming nearby. Ski-ing, nearest station: Mont d'Olmes (1hr20mins), best: Ax-Ski (1hr40mins), Gran Valira in Andorra (2hrs30mins)
Amongst the innumerable places to discover are: Carcassonne medieval citadel, numerous Cathar castles, Canal du Midi (4 kms), Toulouse Lautrec museum (Albi); Airbus, the Cité de l'Espace, the Hôtel Assezat (Toulouse); Musée Fabre (Montpellier); Abbaye de Fontfroide (Narbonne); the Salvador Dali Musuem (Figueres, Spain); the Parc Africain (Sigean); many fabulous caves, notably Cabrespine, Limousis and Niaux (prehistoric cave paintings); the mediterranean coast, especially Gruissan, where cult film "Betty Blue" (just over an hour's drive) was filmed, and iconic Collioure (just under 2 hours drive).
Vineyards: there’s some fabulous wine-making going on around us; it’s a very exciting time for wine in Languedoc Roussillon with new techniques, concepts, labels constantly being introduced without the complete sacrifice of tradition. This translates into some great wines at remarkably reasonable prices. We’re in Cabardès AOC, flanked by the AOCs of the Minervois and the Malpère and opposite is the Corbières AOC so there are plenty of different wines to get to know.
To have a car is essential in order to benefit to the full of staying in such a wonderful area.
