Surrounding Area: La Rochefoucauld is situated on the Tardoire river, has a quaint main street with a lived in feel and its very own chateau dominating river and town as it has done since the 12 century...and the family still live there! It's open to the public. If you are property hunting in the area look no further than the many Agences Immobiliere in the town. A 10 minute drive to Chasseneuil takes you to a cinema showing English language films (V.O.) twice a week. In all directions nearby you will find rolling countryside somewhat reminiscent perhaps of Herefordshire and charming typical Charente villages, hamlets of mellow stone houses and roman tiled roofs, often with a modestly priced bar/restaurant. At St Sornin there is a winery and beyond towards Montbron you will see its vineyards. In the spring the surrounding countryside and woodland fill with bluebells and meadow flowers. There are some great walks and cycle routes and tracks. Summer it gets hot here and the fields are full of honey coloured Limousin cattle, sunflowers, poppies and corn. The autumn brings ceps (if you can find them - if not try the local market Saturday morning market in town!) and autumn colours of bronze and gold. The winter can be chilly, but rarely brings snow...and sometimes surprisingly warm cloudless days of sunshine. Further afield are the Lakes of the Haute Charente (35 minute drive), the town of Montbron (20 minutes) the weekly popular Wednesday morning market at Piegut (40 minutes), further still the quaint towns of Aubeterre and Brantome, both packed with holidaymakers in the summer but quiet in the winter whilst to the west lies Angouleme with its shops and vibrant restaurant quarter and further on through acres of vineyards Cognac, famed for of course its distilleries and annual Blues festival. Beyond Cognac the Atlantic coast, La Rochelle a favourite of mine, and Royan and its villas and beaches. Turning south brings you to the Gironde and the vineyards of St Emilion and of course Bordeaux, both the wine region and the city, well worth a visit and with a splendid Opera House with a full winter season of productions, if that's your thing ( though you would be wise to stay the night as now you are a good 2 hour drive from home!). Although definitely requiring an overnight stay if you can do visit the amazing Gulf of Arcachon with its enormous sand dune and across the gulf Cap Ferret. All bustling with French holidaymakers and boating enthusiasts in the summer, peaceful in winter.
