Description of Property:   The gîte l'Écurie comprises on the ground floor a sitting room with a large authentic fireplace in which a wood stove has been placed. The furnishing is a tasteful mixture of modern furniture and French antiques. A striking element is a part of the 18th century mud foundation of the main house, which is kept visible in the wall, against which the stable is built.
The dining room area is dominated by an 18th century cupboard from an English Pub. A breakfast bar connects to a modern open kitchen.
An open staircase leads to the mezzanine with a double sofa bed and a landing that gives access to a master bedroom with extra bed and a luxurious modern bathroom with shower, double sink and toilet.
A soundproof double door gives access to: gîte La Maisonnette.
This gîte comprises on the ground floor a sitting room with kitchen corner and large fireplace for wood stove. The luxurious modern bathroom with shower, double sink and toilet is also on the ground floor. An open staircase leads to a master bedroom with extra bed and a triple bedroom with 1 single bed and en double bunk bed.
Both gîtes can be used separately or can be combined by simply opening the double door.

Outside Amenities:  The property is surrounded by nearly 2 hectares of grassland and forest. Directly around the house is a large shady garden with a pond. The Victorian gazebo next to the BBQ and pizza oven is ideal for an evening dinner outside.

Surrounding Area:  Mareuil-en-Périgord is a small country town with some shops, a supermarket, a health centre and pharmacy, 2 banks, a nursery school, a public elementary school and a middle school. It's only touristic draw is the neglected castle of Talleyrand, which is inhabited by the heirs of the Duke of Montebello, a title granted by Napoleon to one of his generals, Marshal Lannes.
The area around Mareuil is ideal for hiking and cycling.
Mareuil is situated halfway between Périgueux and Angoulême.
Périgueux (65 kms to the east), capital of the Dordogne, with its impressive Saint-Front cathedral, has a long history dating back to Gallo-Roman times. Culture seekers will find museums, theater and cinemas. The medieval city center in Renaissance style has many cozy squares with restaurants and terraces where you can enjoy an excellent meal.
Angoulême (45 kms to the west), city of art and history, is the capital of the Charente and French capital of the comic strip. The elevated part of the city is surrounded by ramparts from which one has a magnificent view of the valley of the river Charente.
A walk through the city is well worth doing: the 12th century Saint-Pierre cathedral with its high tower and unusual carved facade, an example of the Romanesque poitou style; the town hall and the flowery garden, the mansions, the alleys, great for strolling and the many walls painted with well-known comic strip elements.
Brantôme (25 km to the east), a beautiful medieval town situated on an island in the river Dronne, is known as the little Venice of the Dordogne. Nice restaurants and canoeing on the river is a must. In front of the beautiful Renaissance episcopal palace is a special elbow bridge from the first half of the 15th century. A bustling, lively market every Friday.
Big market every Friday morning in Ribérac, 30 kms.
A visit to medieval Aubeterre (52 km south-west) with its subterranean monolithic church, and to the castle of Bourdeille (25 kms south-east) is also worthwhile.
