Surrounding Area: Limoux is on the Aude River in Cathar country to the South West of Carcassonne. There is a beautiful Square - Place de la Republique with attractive 15th - 16th century houses. There is a covered market here in the Place de la Republique as well as an imposing fountain and a selection of cafes and small shops. The main church in Limoux is the church of Saint-Martin, built next to the river in the 12th Century then restructured in the 15th century and restored in the 19th century. The Aude river is just behind the church, and here you can see the old bridge in Limoux with its passing places and six stone arches, this bridge dates back from the 14th Century and was originally fortified. Between January and March is the Limoux carnival an ancient traditional carnival which still happens every weekend with music and costumes. The carnival is the longest in the world and follows traditions dating back 400 years. Limoux is best known for its sparkling wine Blanquette de Limoux. This is reputed to be the oldest sparkling wine in France and dates back to 1531 when Benedictine monks from Saint Hilaire Abbey discovered that the wine they had laid down had fermented and formed bubbles. This was the beginning of Limoux's sparkling wine and the process the locals say was stolen by Dom Perignon who went on to create champagne. Limoux sparkling wine is a very high quality champagne substitute. Other local towns to visit are
Alet-les Bains - With its abbey ruins
Rennes le Chateau - a small village with beautiful views, it is also the legends associating Rennes-le Chateau with the Holy Grail that attracts many visitors
Rennes-les-Bains - a traditional spa town with a local spa that is open to the public
Saint Hilaire - a pleasant village that is dominated by the lovely Abbey of Saint Hilaire built in the 13th - 14th century
The most important historical site in the Aude and one of the most impressive in the whole of France is the town of Carcassonne. This fortified town is surrounded by immense defences and contains one of the most extensive medieval centres in the world and numerous impressive buildings.
There are numerous activities in the area including white water rafting, cycling routes for both beginners and those who want to follow the routes of the Tour de France. There are local lakes for canoeing, swimming and exploring wildlife. There is an equestrian centre for horse riding and an indoor and an outdoor swimming pool within walking distance of the town centre. Parts of the river are perfect for swimming in allowing you to cool down on the hot summer days. The beach of the Mediterranean is an hour a way and the nearest ski resort about an hour and a half.
